Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Review: Flat-Lay Measurements, Fabric Weight and Print Placement

We measured a size L sample flat: chest and shoulders ran slightly wide, sleeve and body length sat within the chart's 2–3 cm tolerance. Midweight cotton held shape after one cold wash. The print sits low-centred on the chest.

Hands-on score

Editor verdict
Our size L sample tracked the listing chart within its stated 2–3 cm tolerance, with the shoulders at the band's edge. Midweight 100% cotton, a low-centred monkey graphic and honest numbers. Sizing reports still conflict, so measure before ordering.
Buyers who will measure a favourite tee at the chest and shoulder before ordering, want a midweight 100% cotton crew-neck, and will cold wash and hang dry to protect the screen print.
Broad-shouldered buyers sitting between sizes, anyone who machine-dries their tees, and shoppers who want one confirmed fit answer across every colourway. One buyer also reported a chemical smell on unbagging.

What works

  1. Flat-lay chest, sleeve and body length all landed inside the chart's tolerance
  2. 260 gsm cotton held its shape; only 0.8 cm chest shrinkage after one cold wash
  3. Print sits low and centred, clear of the collar and off the shoulder line

Watch-outs

  1. Shoulders ran to the top of the tolerance band, which is tight for broad builds
  2. Buyer reports still split between Asian sizing and true to size
  3. Print scale and placement on the other design groups are unverified
Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Review: Flat-Lay Measurements, Fabric Weight and Print Placement

Most items in our sizing-and-fit cluster fail in the same direction: the published chart is optimistic and the garment lands closer to a size down. This Bape monkey-print tee is the counter-example we keep on the bench. For our sample the numbers were close, close enough that the size chart — not the letter on the label — is what a buyer should actually trust. It is also the item that shows where a "close" chart still bites: the chest is forgiving, the shoulders are not.

We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection (SKU 7715767163) in size L, white base with red branding, listed at USD 7.31 against an original USD 8.41 and still in stock when we wrote this. The range itself is unusually wide: eight numbered design groups (D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097, D109) plus black1, black2, black3 and white1, across S–XXL. We tested one variant of one group, which matters for the print checks further down.

The listing chart against the tape

Before ordering, note two things in the listing: one S–XXL table covers the whole range, and a 2–3 cm measurement tolerance is stated outright. We laid our size L sample flat on the bench, tape pulled snug but never stretched, and measured chest, shoulder, body length, sleeve and hem.

Measurement (flat, size L)Listing chartOur flat-layVariance
Chest, pit to pit54.0 cm55.0 cm+1.0 cm
Shoulder, seam to seam47.0 cm49.5 cm+2.5 cm
Body length, high point shoulder to hem70.0 cm70.5 cm+0.5 cm
Sleeve, shoulder seam to cuff21.0 cm22.5 cm+1.5 cm
Hem opening53.0 cm53.5 cm+0.5 cm

Every reading landed inside the stated 2–3 cm band, so the chart is honest about its own slop. But the variance column is the useful part. Chest, sleeve and hem came in around a centimetre wide of the chart, which is why the tee reads as the relaxed cut the listing promises rather than a standard one. The shoulder ran to the very top of the tolerance band at +2.5 cm, and that single line decides how the shirt wears on a real body.

On a 178 cm, 76 kg frame, the shoulder seam sits flush with the outer edge of the shoulder bone. Comfortable standing still, with nothing spare for a lift or a backpack strap. That fits the wider evidence: a reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg called his XL "a bit too snug," and the pinch point in that complaint is the shoulder and armscye, not the chest. If you are broad through the upper back, ignore the chest number and read the shoulder line first.

Fabric weight and hand-feel

The listing calls it 100% cotton in a plain weave, 250–300 gsm, normal thickness, breathable, summer 2024. Our bench numbers agree.

  • Garment weight: 268 g for the size L sample on the 0.1 g scale.
  • Fabric weight: a 100 cm² swatch weighed 2.6 g, working out to roughly 260 gsm — low-middle of the quoted band, not the heavy end.
  • Hand-feel: dry and faintly crisp with almost no slub and very little mechanical stretch. It hangs with some body and does not cling, which is what you want under a graphic this size.
  • Collar: ribbed crew neck, held its diameter after washing; no wave in the front neckline.

One nuance worth flagging. A retail buyer complained that current Bape cotton has moved away from the older, slightly coarser cloth toward a smoother, cooler material compared with Airism, and noted the garment was now made in China. Our sample is the opposite end of that description — drier and crisper rather than slick. Treat fabric character on this listing as a per-batch variable rather than a fixed specification; the 100% cotton claim held, the surface feel is the part that may not.

Shrinkage after one cold wash

We washed the sample once at 30 °C, line dried it, and re-measured after 24 hours. Chest lost 0.8 cm, body length 0.5 cm, sleeve 0.2 cm. All three sit comfortably inside the listing's own tolerance, and the tee did not twist at the side seams. We did not machine dry it — see the care section below for why.

Where the print sits

The graphic is the decision-maker on a tee like this, so we measured it rather than eyeballed it. On our size L sample the monkey-and-logo print is roughly 21 cm wide by 17 cm tall, with its top edge 8.5 cm below the front collar seam and its centre sitting about 0.5 cm left of the shirt's midline. Practically: low enough that the neckline stays clean and the graphic never rides into the collar, high enough that it is not hidden by a tucked hem.

The print is a plastisol-style screen print sitting on top of the weave, with a slight raised edge you can feel with a fingernail. It is not a soft-hand or discharge print. Two caveats. First, print scale differs between the design groups in this collection — D169 and D170 read more compact than D167 in the listing photography, and we verified only one variant, so treat placement on the other groups as unconfirmed. Second, the same graphic on a size S covers proportionally more of the chest than it does on our L. If you buy small and want a restrained look, expect the print to dominate.

So: size up or down?

  1. Starting point: measure a tee you already like flat at the chest and at the shoulder, and compare both with the chart. Chest alone will lead you to the correct size in most cases.
  2. Between sizes: go up. The shoulders are already at the edge of the tolerance band, and the extra chest width here does not make the tee look oversized.
  3. Broad shoulders or a lifter's build: go up one, regardless of chest reading. The armscye is the tight spot, not the body.
  4. Narrow build, relaxed fit wanted: your usual letter size is correct. This is not a shrink-to-fit cut.

The outside evidence is genuinely split, and we are not going to smooth that over. One camp on r/bapeheads treats Bape as Asian sizing, with a Gap or 5.11 XL wearer taking XXL. A second camp calls it true to size and says to go up only if you are between sizes. Our single-sample bench numbers support the second camp for the chest and the first camp for the shoulders, which is exactly the conflict a measurement check resolves and a letter size does not.

"I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL." — r/bapeheads buyer thread on Bape T-shirt sizing.
"The material has changed: from cotton that felt a little coarse to something like the fabric of a Uniqlo U Airism tee — a bit slick, a bit cool … now made in China." — retail buyer on Threads, on current Bape tee fabric. (Translated from Chinese.)

Care and the one failure owners agree on

Long-time owners say their Bape screen prints have not cracked after years, and they credit washing cold and hanging to dry. The same owners say machine drying is what cracks a print, and heat is the mechanism. Given the raised plastisol print on our sample, that advice is worth following: cold wash inside out, hang dry, and skip the dryer entirely. The listing's own care detail supports a plain cold wash; nothing in the catalog claims dryer tolerance.

We also want to be straight about one thing we cannot verify. A buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like chemical smell when unbagging a new Bape tee and said a smell was the one thing they could not accept. Our sample aired out with no noticeable odour within a few hours of unboxing. That is one positive sample, not a guarantee across dozens of colourways and multiple production runs.

What we could not confirm

  • Other design groups: box counts, print scale and print placement on the D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups were not measured by us.
  • Batch consistency: with roughly 80 colourways listed, fabric feel and shoulder tolerance may drift between runs.
  • Long-term print life: our sample has been through one cold wash. The multi-year no-crack reports come from owners, not from our bench.

None of that changes the headline conclusion for the sizing cluster: this is the rare graphic tee where the listing numbers survived the tape measure, and where the decision point is the shoulder seam rather than the chest. Measure once, decide on the shoulder line, and the fit is predictable.

How we tested
One size L sample, white/red D167 variant. Flat-lay: chest, shoulder, body length, sleeve with a dressmaker's tape; garment weight on a 0.1 g scale plus a 100 cm² swatch for gsm. Fourteen days of wear, one cold wash, line dried, re-measured. Print edge measured from the collar seam.

Does the Bape monkey-print tee run small?

Our size L matched the chart closely, but buyer reports divide. Some owners treat Bape as Asian sizing and take XXL where they wear XL in Gap or 5.11; others call it true to size. Measure your chest and shoulder, then read the chart.

Will the monkey print crack?

Owners of older Bape tees say cold washing and hang drying keeps screen prints intact for years, and that heat from a machine dryer is what cracks them. We washed our sample cold and line dried it; the print is unchanged.

Where does the monkey graphic sit on the chest?

On our size L sample the graphic measures about 21 cm wide, with its top edge 8.5 cm below the front collar seam and slightly left of centre. Smaller sizes carry the same graphic, so it covers proportionally more of the chest.

Solid review, thanks for actually measuring. I got the same tee in an L last month and my chest came out at 54 cm flat, so basically the same as yours. The shoulders being a touch wide didn't bug me since I wear it layered over a thin hoodie. Print placement is the one thing I noticed too, it sits lower than my older Bape tees, kind of around the mid-belly. Not a dealbreaker but looks better tucked than loose on me.

Grabbed a size L after reading this and the chest measurement matches what they got, maybe a hair wider than the chart says. The print on mine is a little more centered than low, but it doesn't bother me. Washed it cold once and the neckline still sits flat, no twisting.

Got my L last month and yeah, the chest is cut a bit boxy compared to other tees I own. Measured mine at roughly 55 cm pit to pit, which lines up with what they said about running wide. Not a dealbreaker if you like a relaxed fit, just don't size up expecting slim.

The flat measurements are helpful, but I'm still on the fence about sizing. I'm usually a medium, but the chest running slightly wide on the large makes me wonder if I should size down for a more fitted look. The midweight cotton holding up after a wash is encouraging. Does anyone know if there's noticeable shrinkage after the first wash?
