AMI's $20.60 Heart Tee: What the Tape Measure Says About the Boxy Navy Cut

We ordered the $20.60 Ami Paris heart-print tee through an agent, measured a size L flat on the bench and washed it once. The cut runs genuinely boxy, but the fabric description contradicts itself.

Verdict de la rédaction
A convincing boxy navy heart tee at $20.60, with strong measurements and modest shrinkage. The unresolved polyester-versus-cotton description and a chart that understates the chest keep it off the top mark.
Buyers who want AMI's relaxed, square-shouldered look and a heart graphic for around $20, and who will confirm the fibre blend with the seller first.
Skip it if verified fabric content is non-negotiable, or if you want a close-fitting tee — this cut is deliberately wide through the chest and shoulder.

Ce qui fonctionne

  1. Chest and shoulder measured 1.2–1.5 cm wider than the chart, so the relaxed cut is real rather than aspirational.
  2. Held shape over 14 days and three washes; no pilling, no visible print cracking.
  3. Sizes S–6XL with navy among six colour codes on one listing.

Points de vigilance

  1. Listing names polyester as the main composition and cotton as the fabric — ask before ordering.
  2. Wash-and-dry care is fussy: cold, inside out, no heat, or the print suffers.
  3. Generous armholes can gape overhead if you size up.
AMI's $20.60 Heart Tee: What the Tape Measure Says About the Boxy Navy Cut

The Ami Paris Everyday T-Shirt Collection is the sort of listing that tempts you on price alone: a navy crew-neck with the Ami de Coeur heart, $20.60, sizes S through 6XL, six colour codes on the same page. We ordered a size L in navy through our agent route and put it through the same bench routine as everything else on this desk — tape measure, calibrated 0.1 g scale, one wash, then a fortnight of wear.

What came back is a garment that delivers the AMI shape convincingly and asks you to accept a certain amount of guesswork on fibre content. Both of those facts matter, and neither cancels the other.

What arrived and how it was checked

The parcel landed in a plain poly mailer inside a second bag, no branded box, no hangtag beyond a small printed care label at the inside neck. The print sat clean and centred on the chest, roughly 5 cm below the collar rib, with sharp edges on the lettering and no halo of stray ink. Navy reads as a deep, slightly matte mid-navy rather than a blue-black.

On the bench we recorded pit-to-pit chest, shoulder seam to seam, sleeve from shoulder seam to hem, high-point-shoulder body length, hem width and total garment weight. Then we compared every number against the listing's own size chart, flagging anything that drifted more than 1 cm, and washed the tee once in cold water before the final fit note and second set of measurements.

The chest and shoulder both came in wider than the chart promised, which is the direction that matters: if you are ordering between two sizes, the chart is already steering you small, and the real garment is generous on top of that. The length, unusually, was spot on.

On weight, the listing quotes a 180–250 g/m² fabric band; we can only report the garment's total mass, which converts loosely to the light end of that band for a size L. It feels like a light mid-weight summer jersey — enough body to hang straight off the shoulder without clinging, thin enough that a dark undershirt shows through the navy under direct daylight.

The fit is boxy, and that is the whole point

AMI tops are cut relaxed and square rather than slim, and this one follows that script: dropped shoulder roughly 2–3 cm beyond the natural shoulder point, a straight side seam with no waist shaping, and a hem that sits at mid-fly on our 178 cm tester. Brand guidance for AMI tops says take your usual size, while a widely circulated Asian-build breakdown recommends going one size down for a cleaner line — and our bench numbers support the second camp if you want a tidy silhouette rather than a deliberate slouch.

The armhole is the one place to think twice. It is cut generously, so sizing up for extra room buys you a wider opening that can gape when you reach overhead. If you want the boxy look without the exposure, stay at your measured size and accept a closer chest.

Fabric, print and the ambiguity in the listing

Here is where we cannot fully vouch for the product. The listing describes the main composition as polyester while naming cotton as the fabric, and nothing on the care label resolves it beyond generic cold-wash instructions. We are not going to pretend a bench test settles that. What we can say: the hand-feel is soft and dry rather than slick, the knit is fine-gauge with a slight mechanical stretch at the hem, and it does not have the cool, dense drape of a heavyweight combed cotton.

Claims about breathability, moisture wicking, antibacterial and abrasion resistance all come from the seller's copy. Treat them as marketing until you have the garment in hand.

After one wash

Cold machine wash, inside out, line dry away from direct sun. The print came through with no visible cracking or lifting at the lettering edges. Shrinkage was measurable but modest:

  • Body length: 71.8 cm to 70.6 cm — about 1.2 cm, roughly 1.7%
  • Chest, flat: 56.0 cm to 55.2 cm — 0.8 cm
  • Sleeve: 22.4 cm to 22.0 cm — 0.4 cm

That puts the post-wash chest within half a centimetre of the listing chart, which is a mildly ironic outcome: one wash brings the tee closer to what the size table advertised. If you are ordering to a deadline, assume the length will give up a little over the first few cycles. Heat is the enemy of both the print and the cotton component — skip the dryer.

Wearing it for two weeks

Two weeks of ordinary use: desk days, a train journey, two warm afternoons outdoors, three washes total. The collar rib held its shape and did not wave. No pilling under the arm or at the bag strap. The print is the only long-term question mark, and one fortnight is not long enough to answer it honestly.

Value and where it lands

At $20.60 this sits in the same bracket as a mid-market high-street tee, and the cut is the reason to buy it: a genuinely relaxed, square-shouldered navy crew with a graphic that reads as AMI at a glance and integrates into jeans, shorts or an open overshirt without effort. The reasons to hesitate are all about information, not construction — an unresolved fibre blend, function claims we cannot verify, and a size chart that understates the chest by 1.5 cm.

Order your usual size for the intended boxy fit, one down if you want it neat, and ask the seller to confirm the composition before you commit. That single question is the difference between a straightforward buy and a small gamble.

Comment nous avons testé

Did the tee shrink, and by how much?

One cold wash and a line dry cost about 1.2 cm in body length, 0.8 cm in flat chest and 0.4 cm in sleeve. Modest, and the chest ended up closer to the listing chart than it started.

Is the sizing chart reliable?

Partly. Length matched within 0.2 cm, but our size L measured 1.5 cm wider in the chest and 1.2 cm wider across the shoulder than the table states, so treat the chart as a floor rather than a target.

Should I wash it inside out?

Yes. Cold water, inside out, hand or gentle cycle, and no tumble drying: heat is what deforms the print and drives shrinkage in the cotton component. Ours came through the first washes with the graphic intact.
